Lavender essential oil is the most popular essential oil used today. There are many uses and benefits of this oil. From fragrance in skin care products, to aromatherapy, to medicinal purposes, lavender essential oil is my “go to” essential oil.
The benefits of lavender essential oil was discovered over 2500 years ago. It was found in King Tut’s tomb when they opened it in 1923. It was reported that the scent of lavender could still be detected in the tomb. The Romans used lavender oil for bathing, cooking and purifying the air. We read of many uses of lavender in the Bible too.
There are many uses for lavender oil. That may be why it’s so popular. It’s one of the few oils that can be applied directly to the skin. With the many uses it’s no wonder it’s such a big seller.
Reduces Stress
Lavender essential oil has been shown to protect from neurological damage. It has been used to treat migraines, stress, anxiety, and depression. In 2013 the International Journal of Psychiatry in Clinical Practice published a study that found that supplementing with 80-milligram capsules of lavender essential oil help alleviate anxiety, sleep disturbances and depression, with no side effects. The same journal published a study in 2014 that Silexan (lavender essential oil preparation) was more effective against generalized anxiety disorder than placebos and the prescription medicine paroxetine, again with no side effects.
Place the essential oil in a diffuser in the frequented space and allow it to run. You can also place it behind the ear for a similar effect.
Supports Brain Function
Studies conducted on rats and mice show that inhaling lavender essential oil vapors can help reduce the brain oxidative stress and improve cognitive impairment. In 2012 the Swiss journal Molecules printed the results of an animal study suggesting that lavender is a viable treatment option for neurological dysfunctions such as stroke. It is believed that lavender’s neuroprotective effects are due to its antioxidant properties.

Treat Cuts and Burns
Lavender essential oil is widely know for its antimicrobial properties. It has been used for centuries to fight infections and combat bacterial and fungal disorders. This statement is backed up by almost 100 studies that back up the claims made. Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine published a study where they evaluated the antimicrobial enhanced ability of lavendula when blend with other oils. Research showed a 1:1 ratio of these oils (clove, cinnamon, tea tree) to be most effective in fighting Candida albicans and Staph aureus – these are two common causes of many fungal and bacterial infections that lead to respiratory pneumonia and skin fungi.
For burn relief and to treat cuts, scrapes or wounds, mix three to five drops of lavender oil with ½ teaspoon of coconut oil, and apply the mixture to the area of concern. You can use your fingers or a clean cotton ball.
Healthy Skin and Hair
Lavender essential oil can help promote healthy skin, and improve many skin conditions. It is effective on acne, canker sores, age spots, and allergic reactions. Research shows that the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties help to ease skin conditions. It can also reverse signs of aging.
To use lavender oil for skin health, combine three to four drops with ½ teaspoon of coconut or jojoba oil, and massage the mixture into the area of concern. You can also add lavender to your face or body wash.
