In 2012 I was diagnosed with Hashimotos. Many of you may be familiar with Hashimotos as a form of hypothyroidism.
I was surprised by the diagnosis, because I thought I was healthy. Yet the longer I sat with the news, and the more information I gathered, I realized it was my lifestyle choices that brought about this autoimmune disorder.
I never really thought about what I ate. I just knew that I never got sick, so I thought I was invincible. Once I thought about it, I realized that the foods I was eating, were really not good for me.
Needless to say, when I was diagnosed, my doctor wanted to put me on medication immediately. I had never been big on taking medication. There was always something about the pharmaceutical companies that didn’t sit right with me.
I protested when she suggested the prescription. I asked her to give me 30 days to try to come up with a natural way to get the Hashimotos under control. She hesitated, but knew how I felt about drugs. She agreed to give me 30 days. But told me if I couldn’t do it, I would have to succumb to the prescription route.
I spent the next thirty days researching Hashimotos, and looking for ways to manage it naturally. What I came up with was Ayurveda. I spent time reading and digesting information about the Doshas, Gunas, Nadis, Marmas, everything Ayurvedic.
What I learned set me on a path of discovery that led me to a lifestyle of eating for my Dosha. Yes, there have been times when I’ve fallen off the wagon, so to speak. But ultimately the change brought me from the beginning of my journey where I dropped 30 pounds (the first month) to becoming certified as an Ayurvedic Practitioner. This so I could share my experience and help others heal.
I was diagnosed with Hashimotos in 2012. By 2015 I showed no signs of having Hashimotos. I’m not saying my results are typical, but I will say, it’s amazing what a little research, a positive attitude and a lot of determination will do.
Now I want to use my knowledge and experience to help others learn about Ayurveda. In hopes that others will be able to heal their bodies and live complete lives filled with a renewed energy.
